Are Smoothies From Smoothie Delivery Services Healthy?

Most smoothie delivery services strive to use nutritious, plant-based ingredients, and many work hand in hand with dietitians to create recipes that are full of health benefits. You’ll often find companies that use superfoods, fiber-rich ingredients, antioxidants, and sustainably sourced produce from organic farms. With that being said, some smoothies are healthier than others, so keep an eye out for extra-sugary “dessert” smoothies that may have higher calorie counts. Be sure to check the ingredient labels and know that drinking smoothies on a regular basis may not be the best option for people with certain health conditions.

Do Smoothie Delivery Services Have Dairy-Free Options?

Many smoothie delivery services tend to steer clear of dairy altogether, especially if the recipes are not pre-blended. Frozen, concentrated, and powdered smoothies allow consumers to choose what mixing base to use, so you can opt for a dairy-free liquid like coconut or almond milk. Although fresh, pre-blended smoothies are more likely to have dairy included, even then, it’s rare to find a smoothie delivery that doesn’t offer entirely vegan or dairy-free selections. To be on the safe side, contact the company before ordering to confirm what’s included in each item.

Are Smoothies High in Sugar?

Since they’re often made of fruit, smoothies in general are high in sugar, particularly if the company adds sugar to the recipes. However, most smoothie delivery services allow fruits and vegetables to naturally sweeten the beverages. While this doesn’t mean they are considered low sugar, they’re a better alternative than those that add sweeteners. Additionally, some fruits contain higher sugar amounts than others, like mangoes, bananas, apples, pomegranates, and oranges. If you want to limit your sugar intake, opt for smoothies made with fruits that contain less sugar, like strawberries, blackberries, avocados, and rhubarb, or simply consume smoothies in moderation.

How Much Do Smoothie Delivery Services Cost?

There are a number of factors that will affect the cost of a smoothie delivery service, including how many items are in each delivery, shipping costs, the frequency of the deliveries, and if the items are coming in fresh, frozen, or powdered form. In our research, the average cost per smoothie hovered around $6, or between $55 and $85 per box. Signing up for a subscription often saves a bundle, especially on the initial box when drastic discounts are offered. The most affordable option we found was a concentrated smoothie mix that brought the individual cost of each smoothie down to $1.50 per serving (plus the cost of whatever mixer you decide to use to dilute it), while the most expensive smoothie delivery service charged nearly $12 per smoothie.

Methodology

To determine the best smoothie delivery services, we considered more than 40 smoothie companies that offered door-to-door deliveries, both with subscriptions and without. We looked at many different smoothie types, from frozen to fresh to powdered, and we also searched for a wide range of delivery service areas across the United States. The ease of ordering, availability of customer service, variety of items, flexibility, and transparency with allergens and dietary information all weighed into our process. Recognizing that customers seek different attributes in delivery services, we awarded our “best of” categories based on some top considerations and shopping styles. The winners we chose all offer excellent value for the cost and provide convenience and reliability to consumers.
