This super easy fish dish has a bit of Asian flair to it. Orange adds a citrus zing to the darker flavors of soy sauce and the spice o the ginger. It’s a classic combination. The glaze couldn’t possibly get any easier. Just mix it together in a bowl and pour it over the fish. Now that’s my kind of dinner!
What other types of fish can I use?
I love the flavor of mahi mahi! It is very lean and has a sweeter flavor than most other fish. It has a fairly firm texture that breaks into very nice moist large flakes. However if you cant find any mahi mahi at your local store any firm white fish will work for this recipe like cod, halibut, bass, grouper, and snapper. With that many options, there’s sure to be something in your area. The same directions and cooking times should apply. Just be aware that cooking time on fish depends on how thick it is so keep an eye on it! Fish is done when it flakes easily with a fork.
How do I tell if mahi mahi is fresh or old?
Make sure you to take the time to pick out a fresh steak of mahi mahi as the difference in taste between old is new is quite significant. To find out if the mahi mahi steak you are looking at is fresh take a look at the meat and bloodlines. A fresh steak should have a consistent pinkish flesh that is slightly translucent. It should also have visible bright red bloodlines. If the fish has brown or has darker markings or dull and or brownish bloodlines that is a sign that it is not fresh. Another great way to tell the freshness of the fish is the smell. If it smells like the sea you know you are dealing with a fresher fish. Now it smells like fish you will know it is an older piece.
Can I cook mahi mahi with the skin on?
If you bought a fillet of mahi mahi and it still has the skin on no worries here as some easy instructions on how to remove the skin. First get a long and flexible sharp knife. start at the tail end and make a small cut at the tail end. Use that cut to get your knife in and position the knife almost horizontally to the fish skin and fillet. Then slowly move your knife along the bottom of the fillet while also pulling the fish skin. Once you’re a little bit into the cut, you can check to see if your cutting too close or far away from the skin and make adjustments as needed. Once the fish skin is off do not forget to remove the bones!
What can I serve this with?
This recipe is great served up with some rice and broccoli. There’s enough of the glaze left in the pan to season your rice. I love making fish for dinner. It’s so easy. It’s light.
