What apples are best for a crumble?
You can use whatever type you prefer, but I tend to lean toward gala apples for this recipe. They’re a little sweeter and pair well with blackberries. If you like things a little more tart, go for granny smith or honeycrisp.
Ingredients for a gluten free crumble topping
Here are the simple ingredients I use for making a gluten free crumble.
Blanched almond flourGluten free oats (optional, but adds a little texture and makes the recipe a little more like a crisp)Coconut sugarMaple syrupSea saltCoconut oil
I combine all of the crumble ingredients in a bowl with a fork and then use my hands to sprinkle the topping over the fruit mixture.
How to cut apples for a crumble
I like to slice my apples thinly, you can also chop the apples up if that’s your preference. And you decide if you want the skin on or not. For me, I don’t mind the skin left on and actually like the way it looks better with it on, so I skip any peeling. I’m kind of a lazy baker sometimes, and for me it just feels like an unnecessary extra step. You do you.
Apple and blackberry crumble serving ideas
While you can serve this apple and blackberry crumble as is right out of the oven, a little something creamy on top is the perfect way to enjoy this crumble.
